The rent affordability is calculated by dividing the state median income by median rent. The states with the lower numbers are the least affordable.

California, Hawaii, Florida, New Mexico, Massachusetts, and Vermont have an affordability ratio of 3 and under.

Kansas, Idaho, Iowa, Virginia, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Washington have the best affordability ratio at 5 plus. This means that the rental prices can still go up without affecting the ability of tenants to pay rent.
